Deposit Patrol is looking for SIA “Depozīta Iepakojuma Operators” packaging

To raise awareness about the scope of the deposit system, the “Deposit Packaging Operator” launched a campaign highlighting the least returned types of beverage containers and encouraging their return to the deposit system.

The main objective of the campaign was to raise interest and awareness about the possibility of returning beverage packaging such as syrup, spirit in PET bottles and cans, non-alcoholic wine, champagne, smoothie and alcoholic cocktail. The campaign created characters that embody each of the least returned deposit packaging types and built resonance through content creators’ channels.

A broad engagement was achieved. Well-known comedians and content creators – Rihards Sniegs and Roberts Silavs – supported the initiative by becoming Deposit Patrol characters themselves, thus contributing to its success. Overall, the campaign helped to reduce the number of deposit “crimes”, contributing to a cleaner environment in Latvia, as demonstrated by the campaign results – the average return rate of packaging increased by 5.88%.

In 2024, VA Communications Rud Pedersen Group presented the campaign at the Baltic Communication Awards “Mi:t&Links”, winning 3rd place in the Storytelling category. It is a great pleasure and satisfaction to work with clients who open up opportunities to achieve even more!

Campaign "Best fans in the world" – celebrating the legendary passion of Latvian hockey fans

“Maxima Latvija” has been a longstanding supporter of children’s and youth hockey, and at the end of 2022 the company launched a new initiative to promote the development and growth of this sport in Latvia. When the 2023 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship took place in Latvia, “Maxima Latvija” saw an opportunity to expand its support nationwide by tapping into the passion of Latvian fans for hockey.

“Maxima Latvija”, in collaboration with VA Communications Rud Pedersen Group, created the campaign “Best fans in the world”, the main goal of which was to highlight the passion of Latvian hockey fans. The campaign included events with Latvian hockey stars, social media activities and an attempt to set a noise record. The initiative reinforced “Maxima Latvija” support for the hockey community and demonstrated the importance of hockey by helping the national team win the bronze medal.

In 2024, VA Communications Rud Pedersen Group presented the campaign at the Baltic Communications Awards “Mi:t&Links”, winning 1st place in the “Sponsorships” category.

Latvia's first Future of Forest Industry Forum "Innovators or Modest Exporters?"

Thanks to the cooperation between VA Communications Rud Pederson Group and Stiga RM, one of Latvia’s leading forestry companies, Latvia’s first timber industry forum “Innovators or modest exporters?” took place on 25 January 2024.

The first of its kind, the forum was attended not only by representatives of the timber industry, but also by experts from the Bank of Latvia, the Latvian Timber Industry Federation, the Ministry of Economy and the Ministry of Agriculture. 

The event highlighted important next steps that the industry needs to take together to promote a long-lasting development. Latvia’s “green gold” must be used wisely, so it is a great pleasure to work together with Stiga RM, who cares about what happens to our country’s greatest treasure – its forests.

A sparkling success: AS Grenardi Group bond offer at Nasdaq Riga

AS Grenardi Group’s journey to Nasdaq Riga shows a story of impressive growth and smart planning. As the leading and fastest-growing jewellery retail network in the Baltics, AS Grenardi Group aimed to expand further in the region. In the spring of 2024, the company announced a public bond offer to institutionall and retail investors that led to the listing of AS Grenardi Group bonds on the Nasdaq Riga Baltic Bond List.

VA Communications Rud Pederson Group consultants helped AS Grenardi Group communicate the bond offer to retail investors. We created an investment story, handled media relations, and increased public visibility.

The bond offering was very successful as the demand surpassed the offer by 75 %. AS Grenardi Group raised the entire planned amount – EUR 12 million. More than 1,300 investors showed interest, with total demand reaching EUR 21 million. Latvian investors made up 85% of the total demand, while Estonian and Lithuanian investors contributed 12% and 3%, respectively.

This success highlights Grenardi Group’s strong market position and the high level of investor confidence in its growth plans.

Informative campaign #smartshopper

Mastercard together with the Financial Latvia Association and banks organised the information campaign #smartshopper. The campaign encouraged residents and businesses to actively use e-commerce solutions while raising awareness of digital safety and sustainable online shopping. During the campaign, cooperation with industry experts, e.g. CERT.lv, State Police, and e-commerce players  – virtual market svaigi.lv, cosmetics manufacturer “Madara Cosmetics” was established. Nationwide online quiz – Be a #smartshopper – was held on Delfi.lv. All the campaign’s educational materials were available on “Delfi Brand Studio” #smartshopper embassy. #smartshopper was implemented and coordinated by Vīlands Associates together with creative agency Grizzly Riga.

Google.org Social Leaders Lab in Riga

Google.org wanted to create a gathering in which leaders from 13 community-driven nonprofits and social enterprises in 11 countries could share their insights, challenges and ideas in exchange receiving possibilities of networking, exploration, meetings with policy and business leaders as well as non-profit leadership skills training delivered by Googlers and well-known experts.

Just before the midsummer festivities in Latvia, VA Communications organised from A to Z the first ever Google.org Social Leaders Lab in Riga to coincide with the Three Seas Summit and give 18 leaders a unique opportunity to meet one another and exchange ideas to further develop innovative and inclusive solutions that will support individuals and communities in need through economic recovery.

Launch of the beverage packaging deposit system in Latvia

On February 1, the beverage packaging deposit system was launched in Latvia. Depozīta Iepakojuma Operators Ltd (DIO) together with VA Communications organised the launch of the deposit system with events in Riga, Liepaja (in cooperation with Rimi), Daugavpils (in cooperation with Maxima) and Rujiena (in cooperation with Elvi). The opening of the Riga deposit point was broadcast live on DIO Facebook and most popular online media portal delfi.lv.  Representatives of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development, the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Economy, the State Environmental Service, traders and packers, as well as media and guests attended the opening. Renārs Zeltiņš, Ketija Šēnberga, Ramona Salmiņa and Artis Ozoliņš were the hosts of the events. The opening was streamed on DIO youtube and translated into English. 

The live broadcast of the opening event was seen by 10.1 thousand people Facebook and 20 thousand delfi.lv users.

1st escape room game in Latvia in cooperation with Fanta

In honor of the new Fanta flavors launched on the market by the Coca-Cola company, a unique escape room game was created as part of the #WhatTheFanta campaign. Beloved Latvian influencers and other Fanta fans were invited to sharpen their detective skills and recover the recipe for the new drink from the collector’s private treasure vault.

The escape room game was created in collaboration between VA Communications and the “Find Exit” quest room. It promoted the recognition of the Fanta brand and gave more than 40 players an opportunity to get acquainted with the unique and unseen world of Fanta. On the other hand, lotteries and activities on social media strengthened the connection with users of Coca-Cola products throughout Latvia.

Informative campaign #smartshopper on Facebook

Mastercard together with the Financial Latvia Association and banks organised the information campaign #smartshopper. The campaign included supportive digital communication on Facebook, as well as collaborations with influencers Kristine Beitika and Alina Keller, who conducted an experiment to educate a family member about safe online shopping using a payment card. The #smartshopper visuals were implemented and coordinated by VA Communications together with creative agency Grizzly Riga.

As a result, in 4 weeks the campaign reached an audience of 154 643 and strengthened the knowledge of Latvian citizens about digital safety.

European Energy Latvia launch

With an ambition to promote Latvia’s energy independence, Danish renewable energy developer European Energy established a representative office in Latvia in late 2021 and in June 2022 made a strong entry into the Latvian market by announcing plans to build Latvia’s largest solar park to date in Tārgale, Ventspils municipality. VA Communications developed a long-term communication strategy and defined communication objectives for the company’s successful launch in Latvia, as well as organized the grand opening of the Latvian office with Danish management and representatives from Latvian ministries and industry. The launch and the company’s ambitious goals attracted wide media interest. 

VA Communications will support European Energy on its path to industry opinion leadership and the development of 1 GW of renewable energy capacity in Latvia.

Depression scorecard: Latvia

After Covid-19 pandemic it was crucial to shape the environment by putting depression into the focus of the healthcare decision makers to secure funding access for improved care of depression patients in 2022-2023. 10 countries from the CEB region come together to prepare a national-level advocacy tool – Depression scorecard. Scorecard collected main information about national level performance for mental health focusing on 4 key areas: integrated care, data, engagement and digital tools. It’s based on the guidelines developed by The Health Policy Partnership financed by Janssen Pharmaceutica NV. 

Project included a regional Patient Declaration on the depression health policy change that together with the Depression scorecard was presented in international strategic conference GLOBSEC Bratislava 2022.

Celebrating its 20th anniversary in Latvia, retail chain “Maxima” organised a grand lottery, providing an opportunity to the customers to win one of 10 new VW T-Cross crossovers in 10 weeks. To promote the campaign a huge environmental object – branded shopping bag with digital time countdown and headline “What’s inside?” was placed in the center of Riga as a teaser, inviting everyone to guess what’s inside. During the launch event, a new car drove out from the “shopping bag” and the beginning of the lottery was announced. The launch event, successfully implemented by the VA Communications and Maxima team, and supported by various activities afterward, achieved a record-breaking application amount from customers’ side.

Healthy eating movement “Ēstprieks”

Movement “Ēstprieks” is a social initiative of “Maxima Latvija” and Children’s Clinical University Hospital started in 2020, with the main goal to provide healthy, local, fresh meals to the patients of Children’s hospital and to educate the society of the importance of a healthy and balanced diet for children.

The process of change in the Children’s Hospital’s nutrition concept has led to the long-cherished idea of a much-needed renovation of the hospital’s kitchen, where cooking technology had not changed for 20 years. The menu, developed together with nutritionist Lizette Puga, includes 8 types of diets so that the meals do not vary over the 10 days.

To promote Coca-Cola and emphasise the key message of the campaign – “Share more than Food. Share time”, an event on Valentine’s Day was organised. The goal of the event was to bring people together and connect lonely hearts, while enjoying Coca-Cola and delicious food. The outcome – 4 matches made!

Virsnīši family adventure in Africa

In November 2019 well known Latvian influencer family Virsnīši fulfilled their lifetime dream – going to Africa. The dream was big and seemed almost unreal – going more than 15 000 km away from home on a self made house on wheels together with two small children.

The dream was fulfilled thanks to Fazer, who believed in their dream to travel to Africa in 2 months visiting 9 countries. The aim of the campaign was to strengthen Fazer’s image as a family company, who encourages everyone to strive for their biggest dream to come true.

Virši goes into the stock exchange

Showing rapid growth and defining ambitious targets for further growth, Virši, a domestic trader of fuels and alternative energy sources, decided to go public in early 2021, with an initial public offering (IPO) in the second half of the year.

VA Communications consultants were engaged to develop and implement the communication strategy. By participating in and successfully implementing a Baltic-level communication and branding campaign, the company was able to attract wide media and public attention in Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. As a result, the IPO achieved the highest investor turnout in Latvian history, with demand almost doubling the base offer. A total of 9 979 investors applied for 1 735 489 new Virši shares. Both institutional and private investors were interested in the company’s shares and a total of EUR 7.8 million in capital was raised.

Contactless card campaign in Latvia "Beep and done!"

Mastercard in partnership with Finance Latvia Association organized informative campaign “Beep and done!” in Q1, 2019 to raise awareness about the benefits and security of contactless payments among merchants and consumers in Latvia. During the campaign, the main partners – Rimi, Maxima and Narvesen – informed about the benefits and security aspects of contactless payments.

This campaign involved the process of planning and developing activities, creating content, organising a launch event and several discussions, maintaining media relations and communication with all parties involved. The campaign not only achieved the set KPIs but also involved experts from areas such as finance, merchandising, IT, public administration and others.

The campaign’s slogan “Paying with a Beep” became a frequently used phrase to describe the payment process.

Due to good results Mastercard decided to organize a second wave of the campaign. 

Campaign was implemented by the public relation agency Vīlands Associates in collaboration with main partners the merchandising and marketing consulting agency !ASAP Promo and the digital solution agency Grizzly Riga. 

The campaign placed 3rd in the communication sector competition Mi:t&Links, Baltic Communication Awards, in the category B2B Communication.

Introduction of deposit system in Latvia - communication strategy

In the second half of 2020, the State Environmental Service (SES) organized a tender for a potential deposit system operator that would implement and ensure the operation of the deposit system in Latvia from February 1 of 2022 until January 31 of 2029. SIA “Depozīta Iepakojuma Operators” (DIO) also took part in the tender, whose application included a detailed integrated communication strategy developed by “Vīlands Associates” for various target groups. “VA Communications” also provided communication support for DIO during the SES assessment. The implementation of the system took a hard and difficult path for 20 years, and finally at the end of 2020, DIO was recognized as the winner of the competition organized by the SES. Being aware that the introduction of the deposit system is a significant national level event that will affect the entire public, DIO together with “VA Communications” is currently implementing an ambitious and very responsible task – informing the public, as well as separate target audiences about the system implementation and various related processes.

The habits of smart online shopping are strengthening

In the summer of 2020, Mastercard in cooperation with Finance Latvia Association, banks and local merchants, organized the informative campaign #smartshopper. The campaign encouraged residents and businesses to actively use e-commerce solutions while raising awareness of cybersecurity and digital safety. 

During this campaign, cooperation with industry experts, for example, CERT.lv, was established, promoting public discussion on safe online shopping. An educational lecture was organized with live broadcasts in the leading online news portals delfi.lv and tvnet.lv, reaching a record-high number of viewers. 

A separate section on “Delfi Brand studio” – #smartshopper embassy, allowed to follow all of the campaign news. 

In cooperation with barbora.lv and rimi.lv, as well as 220.lv, mobilly.lv, tele2.lv and others, a first of a kind online lottery was organized with the participation of online purchases made  only with a Mastercard payment card. 

The campaign was able to adjust to the changing environment due to the restrictions of the Covid-19 pandemic, and was able to maintain the relevance of the topic, as well as remain on the agenda of the media and other stakeholders.

Children's Rehabilitation Day

The Children’s Rehabilitation Center “Poga” and the retail chain “Maxima Latvija” in 2017 jointly launched a charity campaign, which funds rehabilitation for children with disabilities. To raise public awareness of children with disabilities and their integration into society, in the autumn of 2017, a special tradition – Children’s Rehabilitation Day celebration – was started, to which families with children with disabilities and children willing to participate were invited.

The “Ghetto Games” sports base was adapted to the needs of children with disabilities, offering athletic, educational, musical, creative and relaxing activities all day long not only for children, but also for adults. During the Rehabilitation Day, children had the opportunity to meet with paralympic athletes from Latvia.

In year 2018 Children’s Rehabilitation Day was held for the second time, establishing a tradition of dedicating a special day for celebration for children with disabilities, thereby encouraging the integration of these children in the society.

Meet the ŠKODA family

In 2018, Škoda Latvia introduced their clients with the new models – crossovers KODIAQ and KAROQ, and the sports model OCTAVIA RS.  ŠKODA can also be proud of their world-class motorsports team – ŠKODA Motorsport Baltic.

During the campaign MEET THE ŠKODA FAMILIES  a series of short videos and photo stories were produced to showcase the family adventures of ŠKODA ambassadors in the new ŠKODA models. ŠKODA Motorsport team was integrated and the ambassadors met on the track to mark the end of the campaign with a competition.

We developed the campaign strategy, creative idea and secured it’s implementation. Campaign activities focused on owned and paid digital channels.

Cognizant Technology Solutions launch in Latvia

Media relations and event management support for the grand opening of the Center of one of the world’s leading IT companies – Cognizant (NASDAQ-100:CTSH). Together with UK and Latvia’s colleagues from Cognizant Technology Solutions we developed the main messages and the concept of the event with the aim to successfully launch Cognizant brand in Latvia.

The event at the Cognizant Center brought together guests from the Ministry of Economics, Cognizant international and about 150 employees, industry partners, media representatives and other guests, who celebrated the new addition to the IT sector in Latvia.

Harmonizing Stakeholder Interests - the Rail Baltica Global Forum

The Rail Baltica Global Forum, organised by RB RAIL AS, has become an annual tradition. This international event fosters the understanding of the mutual benefits to be achieved from the new economic corridor, the potential mobility opportunities that it will bring, and works toward harmonising the interests of the sides involved. The spirit of the Forum promotes the use of progressive technologies, considering the needs of the future passengers and logistics.

The Forum brings together leaders from the political, societal and the business side. It also serves as a platform for strategic and political discussion and decision-making in the Baltics and beyond. The Industry Supplier’s Meeting point fosters networking and cooperation among the potential Rail Baltica suppliers. During the event, the participants are informed about the upcoming tenders for the year.

Ridesharing - toward progressive regulation

The ride-hailing industry clarification and argumentation to the decision makers in order to introduce the industry regulation in Latvia. Within two years Latvia has adopted one of the most progressive regulations in the European Union – Amendments in the Law on Carriage by Road and recent secondary legislation. The new regulation creates legislative framework for the development of this new industry. VA Government and Vīlands Associates formed the understanding of economic opportunities and customer benefits brought by the technological development.

AS MADARA Cosmetics – the most successful IPO since 2004

Development, planning and implementation of the communication campaign within AS MADARA Cosmetics initial public offering (IPO). At the start of the project a communication strategy and detailed activity plan was created with the aim to attract both institutional and retail investor attention, as well as educate and inform society about the world of investment. Within the communication campaign, wide media and potential investor interest was gained regarding AS MADARA Cosmetics, therefore additionally strengthening the image of the company as a cosmetics industry leader with expertise within the capital market scope. After the closing of the IPO, the total demand of investors represented 255% of the offer base, from which more than 700 applications were received from retail investors, and the company successfully enrolled in the Nasdaq Riga alternative stock exchange market First North. AS MADARA Cosmetics IPO can be considered as the most successful initial public offer in Latvia since 2004.

Tele2 SSC for students

Together with Tele2’s Shared Service Centre (Tele2 SSC), we serve to implement communications activities under the leitmotif, ‘Be there, where the audience is’. By thinking creatively and by respecting the brand culture, Tele2 SSC seeks out and creates new opportunities that will help it to achieve its main goal – to be one of the best employers in the IT sector in the view of its audience.
In parallel with this, the company is looking for opportunities in which it can encourage young people to select IT industry studies. Most especially, the company wants to equalise the balance between men and women in the industry, breaking existing stereotypes and encouraging girls to choose studies in IT. To this end, a conference entitled Girls Make it Happen has been organised, a study on student interest in working in IT is being conducted, and programming classes have been provided for a hundred girls from all over Latvia to prove that programming can be learned and mastered by anyone.

Maxima communication plan

Consultations in decision-making were provided after the tragic events in Zolitude. We have helped to shape the Change Plan in three directions: involving care for employees, care for security, and support for the victims of the tragedy. Communications consultations are still present in the context of Zolitude. Meanwhile, we are also creating and implementing Maxima’s corporate communication strategy. We have carried out various social projects in collaboration with the charity organisation, Ziedot.lv, and with the Children’s Hospital Foundation. We are also implementing communications activities for brand projects such as the talent competition, ‘Maksimālisti’ and Latvia’s ‘biggest pumpkin’ championship.

Hansa Martix communication plan

A communication plan has been developed for attracting investors to Hansa Matrix. The basis of the plan is formed by the Hansa Matrix story, the purpose of which is to promote an understanding of the company and increase the awareness of it with the target audience regarding its activity and success. Hanner’s new building is the Class A offices which are known as Place Eleven. The goal of Property developer Hanner has a developing communication strategy which aims to highlight the uniqueness of the Place Eleven office building on the Latvian property market, as well as bringing to the fore the topic of BREEAM certificate quality standards in regards to the entire building life cycle. Rail Baltica

Development and implementation of the Rail Baltica project communications strategy and action plan for forthcoming years for its central coordinator, the joint venture, ‘RB Rail AS’, which was established by the three Baltic States, defining aims, tasks and tactics, including the roles and responsibilities of the parties involved in order to ensure successful project communication with a wide range of stakeholders, and internal and external audiences. Once the communications strategy for the Rail Baltica project was under development, we had a visionary look into the future by analysing both current and future political life cycles and the agenda, as well as considering the project’s risks and opportunities, and technology trends which were related to the project.

Starship technologies

Starship Technologies is one of Estonia’s potentially successful start-ups. In the future, technology which is created by this company may help to move small consignments around in the urban environment. The company has attracted tens of millions of euros for the development of its product. We participated in hosting the Latvian portion of the global roadshow which was run by Starship Technologies, and achieved the attendance of the planned audience.

In cooperation with an international finance communications agency, FTI Consulting, the company received successor information regarding the purpose, process, and meaning of the initial public offer for Citadele Bank shares for the capital markets of Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuania. The foundation for Citadele’s ambitions for growth is an experienced international team of shareholders with a long-term vision for the development of the bank and the Baltic region, as well as a professional management team and positive financial indicators. During the international and regional Baltic communications campaign, we succeeded in attracting a great deal of interest on the part of public opinion and potential investors; Citadele was able to establish an image of a national banking leader, both in Latvia and internationally, and the bank’s public image was increased in Lithuania and Estonia.

The #KārumsIedvesmo campaign

The #KārumsIedvesmo campaign was driven through the brand’s strong cooperation with the Latvian School Youth Song and Dance Celebration in order to be able to build the company’s image and to grab the attention of young people when it comes to a vital part of Latvian tradition – folk songs. As an ambassador for the programme, a well-known Latvian musician by the name of Ralfs Eilands was selected. A total of 105 participants qualified for the competition, including singers and dancers.
As a result of the campaign more than nine thousand unique voters participated in determining the winner – a folk song group from Liepāja who recorded a video together with Ralfs Eilands. Their responsiveness and enthusiasm, as well as their successful collaboration with the programme’s ambassador, were keys to success for this project, which helped to bring to life traditional Latvian folk songs. Airport "Riga" towards regional leadership

The communications strategy development for Riga International Airport, already supports the existing aviation strategy for Latvia by the Boston Consulting Group. The development included communications goals, objectives, and action examples, as well as defining the preconditions for these objectives to ensure the successful achievement of various levels of action for Riga International Airport in dealing with internal and external audiences. During the development of the communications strategy, the airport’s internal communications processes and routines were also analysed, along with its public communications and work with target audiences, and an assessment was made of the region’s equivalent airports and their communications practices.

Passat. New leader

Developed, coordinated, and implemented the Baltic communications campaign for the new Passat and its launch in the premium segment. Created the concept of the ‘New leader’ (Jauns līderis), which focused on car users in traditional and social media. Organised various events for loyal and potential customers. Developed the communications toolkit for dealers. The new Passat visibility and sales results demonstrate the fact that the implementation of the marketing concept in the Baltics has been successful.

Glimstedt - communication strategy

Us entrusted work – strengthening the awareness of Glimstedt and positioning it with opinion leaders in the public space. This included a study of its reputation amongst opinion leaders and employees, as well as developing its communications strategy and implementation. In parallel with this it has also been supporting content creation on the company’s website and in creative afternoons for the company’s employees.

Haralds Velmers, Liepajas metalurgs

Communications support for the administrator, explaining to the general public the insolvency proceedings and sales process for the strategic investor of ‘Liepājas Metalurgs’. This has been recognised as being one of the most successful cases of selling a state-owned property. The most important audiences included creditors, the general public, employees, and the government, all of whom were successfully convinced that it will be restored.

Banks Against Corruption

With help from Vīlands Associates, the leading Latvian financial institutions drew public attention to dishonesty in the Latvian legal system and the consequences of insolvency abuse in the national economy and in terms of public morality. Public opinion was formed thanks to the balanced information it received, and the legal system began to make decisions that were more just. You can view the project video here.
